New book cover illustration for Codice Edizioni: author Ling Ma brings us eight widely different tales of people making their way through the madness and reality of our collective delusions. The Italian title “La donna che scompare” (kind of ‘The woman who vanishes’) evokes films by Hitchcock and Antonioni, which also have inspired this illustration. It's nice when illustrations have a second life! Thanks to picture editor Lidwine Kervella and to Theispot stock! This piece is my contribution to the exhibition IN CAMMINO held at the prestigious Palazzo Madama in Turin, Italy (July 12 - October 13, 2023). The project tells stories from the Piedmont area crossed by the Via Francigena, the ancient road and pilgrimage route running from the cathedral city of Canterbury in England, through France and Switzerland, to Rome.
I represented the pilgrimage route like the thread of a ball of yarn that the pilgrim carries with him on his journey. The tangle represents the many kinds of motivations behind the pilgrimage: spiritual, devotional, sometimes even penitential, as it was originally in the Middle Ages. Proceeding on the journey, the skein gradually unravels until it completely dissolves at the end of the pilgrimage. Thanks to Ale Giorgini and to Professor Villa, director of Palazzo Madama, for having me involved me in this project! |
