Latest illustration for Mezza Riga, literary newsletter about tennis, dedicated to the 2025 ATP Finals. Born as the Grand Prix Masters, the ATP Finals should by definition host the masters of this sport. But what defines a Master? And how do we apply it to tennis? Article by Gianni Montieri. Thanks to Gianluca Di Tommaso at NR edizioni!
Three illustrations for a piece by Sally Rooney published by Internazionale about Ronnie O'Sullivan, one of the most talented and accomplished players in snooker history. Which processes take place in his brain when he plays? Like many athletes, he's able to do complex calculations intuitively. His absurd talent goes together with a mercurial temperament, as shown by the many ups and downs throughout the life and career.
This should have been the cover for La Croix L'Hebdo's special issue in memory of Pope Francis.
The illustration is based on an unused sketch I made for another cover project dedicated to Pope Francis in the time of Covid. Thanks anyway to AD Guillaume Suard, as usual. I illustrated an interesting essay by Slavoj Žižek about the film Joker, for Italian magazine Internazionale. The philosopher explains why an immersion into the dark world of Joker can cure us of politically correct illusions and simplifications, among other things. Žižek also describes Joker's behavior from a psychoanalytic point of view, and tells why Joker couldn't be a symbol of political protest in the real world, as the character's violence has not a political intent and he's just an explosion of negativity for his own sake.
Cover and interior illustrations for Science magazine. This week's main issue is the research of research: meta researchers study how research is done - and why it goes wrong. Two spot images illustrating quotes from famous scientists: “If I have seen further than others, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants” (Isaac Newton), and “A person who has not made his great contribution to science before the age of 30 will never do so" (Albert Einstein).
A couple of images made for Dante Plus 2017, an upcoming exhibition to celebrate the poet Dante Alighieri and his Divine Comedy. The project features 30+ internationally recognized illustrators and artists.
It has been 25 years since Italian actor Ugo Tognazzi died. To celebrate one of the greatest actor of his generation, association Tapirulan asked 33 artists to create a poster artwork inspired by one of Tognazzi's movies. Here's my contribution, "Tragedy of a Ridiculous Man" (1981).
The exhibition is called 33T d'autore. You can visit it at Spazio Tapirulan (Corso XX Settembre 22, Cremona, Italy) until November 22. A portrait of Massimo Vignelli, the acclaimed graphic designer best known for his design of the New York City subway map.
Glad to know that San Antonio Spurs' player Marco Belinelli won the Three-Point Shootout at the 2014 NBA All-Star Weekend in New Orleans. Born in Bologna, he played in both teams of our city between 2001 and 2007 before moving to NBA.
