New cover illustration for Science about how all around the world democracy is losing ground. Polarization and disinformation have rendered liberals and conservatives unable to agree on basic facts. In this special issue, experts examine the state of democracy and how it must adapt to achieve its ideals in the 21st century.
An illustration for Columbia College Today describing the intensified anxieties about the 2020 elections, and the complicated history of the right to vote in the US. Author Michael Waldman.
Thanks to AD Eson Chan, as always! Illustration for a story by Eduardo Halfon about a lake in Guatemala that used to be beautiful in the '70s, then with time became an awful place due to the pollution, deforestation and war crimes.
Article published by Italian magazine Internazionale. Thanks to AD Alberto Notarbartolo, as always. An illustration for Monmouth magazine about the spiritual politics of TV producer Norman Lear and the cultural influence he exerted in the 1970s with many sitcoms including All in the Family, as documented in the new book from L. Benjamin Rolsky. I've portrayed here the famous character of Archie Bunker from All in the Family.
Thanks to Patrick Kirchner at Dog Ear Consultants, as always! This week on French magazine L'Express, an illustration about the issue of self-censorship in French universities. In order to avoid students' outbursts, or out of fear of being considered "reactive" themselves, academics sometimes prefer to avoid certain subjects or think twice before organizing conferences on themes deemed too sensitive.
Thanks to AD Marie Varéon. I illustrated an interesting essay by Slavoj Žižek about the film Joker, for Italian magazine Internazionale. The philosopher explains why an immersion into the dark world of Joker can cure us of politically correct illusions and simplifications, among other things. Žižek also describes Joker's behavior from a psychoanalytic point of view, and tells why Joker couldn't be a symbol of political protest in the real world, as the character's violence has not a political intent and he's just an explosion of negativity for his own sake.
This week on Science magazine, a story about Brexit and how it has already taken a toll on researchers in the UK.
Thanks AD Marcy Atarod! This week on Internazionale, three illustrations for an article by John Lanchester about the Universal Basic Income, a radical idea that "has the potential to be the frame-changing, game-changing solution to a whole set of economic and political problems", according to the author.
Thanks to AD Alberto Notarbartolo, as always! Cover illustration for BBC World Histories about the role of China in the global history. Has the Asian giant always been the world's greatest superpower, and is Europe and America's dominance just a blip?
Thanks to AD Susanne Frank and editor Matt Elton, as always! In the upcoming issue of World Histories, the feature story is about the crusades and how they shaped today's world. Six experts discuss whether those events continue to affect lives and politics in the region and around the globe today. Thanks to AD Susanne Frank and editor matt Elton, as always!
