Book cover illustration of "Nella casa dei tuoi sogni" (In the Dream House) by Carmen Maria Machado, published in Italy by Codice Edizioni: a chilling memoir about domestic abuse, detailing the author's abusive relationship with another woman. An illustration for Nike's brand new hub Nike Journal about why optimist people seem to be healthier and more likely to reach their goals than people with negative expectations.
Thanks to AD Brian Bantog! Two illustrations for Internazionale about why it's improbable machines will ever be capable of a genuine human-level thinking, despite all the progress in artificial intelligence. Original article by Tim Crane.
Thanks to AD Alberto Notarbartolo, as always! An illustration for Monmouth Magazine about how the COVID-19 crisis affects the mental health of different groups, and how healthcare professionals can prepare for this “second tidal wave” from the pandemic.
Thanks to AD Tony Marchetti. Latest illustrations for Internazionale magazine about mindfulness. According to Ronald Purser, this market-friendly movement could be easily co-opted and reduced to merely pacifying feelings of anxiety and disquiet at the individual level, enticing us to accept things as they are, rather than seeking to challenge the social, political and economic inequalities that cause such distress.
I illustrated an interesting essay by Slavoj Žižek about the film Joker, for Italian magazine Internazionale. The philosopher explains why an immersion into the dark world of Joker can cure us of politically correct illusions and simplifications, among other things. Žižek also describes Joker's behavior from a psychoanalytic point of view, and tells why Joker couldn't be a symbol of political protest in the real world, as the character's violence has not a political intent and he's just an explosion of negativity for his own sake.
Book cover of Harmless Like You by Rowan Hisayo Buchanan, published in Italy by Codice Edizioni as Innocua come te (2019). At its heart is Yuki Oyama, a Japanese girl fighting to make it as an artist, and her struggle with her decision to leave her two-year-old son, Jay. As an adult, Jay sets out to find his mother and confront her abandonment. Cover design by Silvia Virgillo/Puntuale Creative, art director Enrico Casadei.
Three illustrations for IU Alumni Magazine about why so many managers lack the “soft skills” of interaction - empathy, self-awareness, listening, etc., ending up creating miscommunication and untenable situations in the workplaces they run. And how to fill this gap.
Thanks to AD Brittany Nicole Olson! Two illustrations for The Rotarian, magazine for Rotary International, about the joy of procrastination: Joe Queenan explains why it's time to check "make a list" off your list. Thanks to AD Jennifer Moody for the fun assignment!
Two illustrations for SUNY Geneseo magazine about the connections between people and place, and how the character of a place shapes your experience there, and maybe even shapes the person you are.
